Esports tournaments are nearly always physical events in which occur in front of a live audience. The competition may participate a larger gathering, such as Dreamhack, or the competition will be the entirety of the event, like the entire world Cyber Games. Tournaments take several formats, but the most typical are solo or double elimination, sometimes hybridized with group stage. Competitions will often have referees or officials to monitor for cheating. Although competitions involving video gaming have long existed, esports underwent a significant transition in the past due 1990s. Beginning with the Cyberathlete Professional League in 1997, tournaments became much bigger, and corporate and business sponsorship became more prevalent.
